Different Sport Psychology Professionals

People often get confused between a sport psychologist and a sport psychology consultant.

A difference between a sport psychologist and a sport psychology consultant is the degree each professional obtained.  A sport psychologist obtained a PhD in clinical or counseling psychology and completed courses in sport psychology as part of his or her graduate education.  In contrast, a sport psychology consultant obtained a Masters or PhD in sport psychology, sport and exercise psychology, or performance psychology.

With different degrees, both professionals qualify to help people with different issues.  A sport psychologist can help people with mental health issues such as depression or anxiety disorder and can help people with improving their performance by using performance enhancement skills.  Unlike a sport psychologist, a sport psychology consultant does not have the graduate education training to help people with mental health issues.  A sport psychology consultant is only trained in using performance enhancement skills to help individuals improve their performance by conquering performance issues like those discussed below.  Some examples of performance issues that a sport psychology consultant can help with are lack of motivation and transferring performance from practice to competition.
